Translation:
Hi, I hope you are well along with your family
and loved ones. I hope you will come to Nicaragua.
I would like to tell you that my favorite
subject is English and my favorite sports are soccer and
baseball. In Holy Week they play a lot of sports that I
like a little bit.
My parents are very grateful for your help,
because they are very poor. I wish to better myself and I think
I am doing better in my classes. My father is a laborer and my
mother is a housewife. My brothers and I help her at home.
What I would like most is to be an English
teacher or a doctor. I am very grateful to you.
Thank you very much. Goodbye. I love you very much.
My mother and father also thank you.
What this is all about:
Abel lives in Villa Catalina, the village we
visit on our mission trips to Nicaragua, which is close to the
city of Chinandega. A "free" education in Nicaragua
goes to the equivalent of the 5th or 6th grade, and after that
the student must pay.
It costs only about $25 month for an advanced
education, but in a country where the average income is about $1
day, it is simply impossible for most parents to send their
children. (Many children don't even get to attend the free
classes because they have to work to help support their
families).
So for little Abel to go to school and learn
English and dream of being a doctor is a big deal for him and
his family, indeed. (in addition to his tuition, I
also pay the cost of him taking the bus to school and for his
school books and supplies).
In almost every letter he tells me his parents
are grateful, and that his mother wants me to come to their home
so she can meet the angel who is looking over his son. I intend
to go straight to his house and give her a big hug when we go
there.
I can't wait to meet this little man when we go
to Nicaragua in August.
